Power Shift Training Series, Part I
Dates: Main Session: October 6th, 13th, 20th, and 27th, 2021
Time: 3:30pm -5:00pm EST
Location: Virtual
Note: Some hosts are facilitating their cohorts at alternative dates/times to the main session in order to accommodate their participants' schedules. Please reach out to your Network Contact to confirm your cohorts time.
This is an introductory level training series intended for those who are new to ABCD or who are looking for a refresher of key principles. Through this four-part webinar series, participants will gain an understanding of the seven basic needs found in every community and an understanding of current investments in addressing these basic needs: physical, vocational, environmental, social/emotional, the need for power and control, the need for collective voice, and psycho-spiritual needs. Participants will also explore in detail the Four Bedrock Principles of ABCD that lay the foundation for the Empowered Communities approach, and the paradigm shifts that reveal them: 1. Relief to Development, 2. Doing For to Doing With, 3. Cause to Community, and 4. Needs to Assets.
Each session will feature a breakout session hosted by Network Members who will share how the tools presented apply to their respective community context. Through this learning cohort structure, groups will discuss the materials together and begin to synthesize the learning into their unique context.
What is the Empowered Communities Network? The Empowered Communities Network is a network of ABCD practitioners who are applying the Empowered Communities Framework in neighborhoods across the United States. Members receive access to ongoing training, monthly coaching and quarterly Community of Practice gatherings.
Why should you join the Power Shift Training Series? The traditional approach to community development is to assess a community’s needs, often through a needs assessment survey, and design programs with the purpose of meeting those needs. This approach works from the belief that neighborhoods are overrun with problems and that community building work begins on a deficit. The Power Shift Training Series will take you through the ABCD approach, which stems from the knowledge that neighborhoods are overflowing with dreams and the gifts needed to realize them into being. When community members are able to connect to one another, co-create a vision for their neighborhoods, and share their gifts with one another towards that vision, thriving communities can be built.
The materials in this training will challenge you to shift your thinking on an individual level, as well as shift the way your organization serves communities. It will also offer you a supportive space to be in communion with fellow community builders who are beginning their ABCD journey and making the shift. Your host will act as a guide by sharing their experiences of implementing the Empowered Communities Framework within their own organizations, and its resulting impact.
